Video Guidelines

Truman State University Video Guidelines

These guidelines and standards apply to videos that will be posted on the Truman website and/or Truman’s social media channels.

General Standards

All videos must:

  • have captions
  • represent the University and the brand
  • be of the highest quality, in focus, and have clear audio

All titles or text added to a video must be proofread for accuracy and proper grammar.

Technical Standards

  • Video Format: The preferred file type is MPEG (.mp4).
  • Aspect Ratio: Native aspect ratio without letterboxing (example: 16:9).
  • Resolution: High definition video at 1280×720, 1920×1080 or higher.
  • Audio Format: MP3 or AAC preferred.

Accessibility

Videos should be produced and delivered in ways that ensure all members of the audience and access the content. An accessible video includes:

  • captions*
  • a transcript
  • audio description

*Online video content must be captioned to enable accessibility for people with disabilities. Captioning is a relatively simple process that allows for greater functionality of web content and ensures that videos are in compliance with Sec. 508 of the Rehabilitation Act as well as Accessibility guidelines.

Copyrighted Material

Copyright information for photos, graphics and music must be identified by source. Use of copyrighted images or music for educational use may require additional copyright permission for promotional use. If permission has not been acquired, the video cannot be used on the Truman website or social media channels.

Procedure for Sharing Video Files

If you have a video you would like to post on the Truman website, you will need to send your video file to the Public Relations Office so your video file can be uploaded to Truman’s YouTube channel. The video will be unlisted. YouTube will generate HTML code that can be used to embed the video on a web page. You can use the Google Drive method to share the video file with pr@truman.edu.
